SD-WAN is an acronym for a Software-defined Wide Area Network. SD-WAN is a specific application of software-defined networking (SDN) technology applied to WAN connections such as broadband internet, 4G, LTE, or MPLS. It connects enterprise networks — including branch offices and data centers — over large geographic distances. An SD-WAN uses a centralized control function to securely and intelligently direct traffic across the WAN. Are MPLS-VPNs secure?

Since MPLS-VPNs do not require encryption, there is often a concern over the security implications of using MPLS to tunnel non-encrypted traffic over a public IP network.

There are a couple of points to consider:

MPLS-VPN traffic is isolated by the use of tags, much in the same way ATM and Frame Relay PVCs are kept isolated in a public ATM/Frame Relay network.

MPLS-VPNs do not prohibit security. If security is an issue, traffic can be encrypted before it is encapsulated into MPLS by using a protocol such as IPSec or SSL.

Customers comfortable with carrying their traffic over public ATM or Frame Relay services should have the same level of comfort with MPLS-VPN services.

An IEPL is an International Ethernet Private Line. The IEPL is a true Ethernet circuit from one end to the other. This means that you can operate the circuit without the need for a router or CSU/DSU by configuring the circuit on the MAC address level. While the cost of an IEPL may be more expensive, the elimination of the router costs should factor into your decision process. Pure Ethernet circuits will provide less jitter and higher performance than the IPLC.
IEPL has become available in most major areas, therefore, you see more IEPL circuits. Depending on your specific requirements, there are alternative technologies available to satisfy your point-to-point connectivity requirements.
